Site Checks and Maintenance Volunteer (Franchises Lodge – Livestock Checker)
What is a Livestock Checking Volunteer?
Each of our Livestock Checkers will visit the site once a week for between 30 minutes to 2 hours (May-Nov) to check the health and welfare of the livestock. They will learn how to behave around livestock and what signs to look for to ensure both healthy livestock and grassland.
What’s in it for you?
- The opportunity to volunteer independently, with the support of the Warden and Site Manager.
- The opportunity to learn about the relationship between grazing livestock and wildlife, and how they benefit each other.
- The opportunity to take part in occasional training sessions, walks and get-togethers with other volunteers.
- Enhancing your skills and knowledge in species ID, livestock, and grassland management.
- Gain valuable experience with a well-known conservation organisation.
What’s involved?
- The main task for volunteers will be to check the livestock each week, either through binoculars or when possible, by approaching the herd or flock.
- Volunteers will also be asked to monitor grassland condition and update the site team regularly.
- Volunteers will also support the Warden by checking fence lines and fields for any hazards, such as litter.
- Becoming familiar with and then following The RSPB's Health & Safety and Lone Working guidance at all times.
This role will suit people who
- Enjoy being outdoors in all weathers;
- Are calm and reliable;
- Live near to site;
- Are available to complete checks between 8am and 4pm on the same day each week (May-Nov);
- Are comfortable around livestock.
This is a really rewarding role. You will enjoy doing your role in a beautiful wildlife rich setting, the great outdoors will be your place of work and you will be able to take it at your own pace.
