Specialist/Expert Volunteer (Crafting campaigner)
Do you like to sew? Do you love nature? Are you good at organising people?
This is a really exciting opportunity to make some beautiful fabric banners celebrating the birds we love and want to save. We'll be taking them to Westminster to help us encourage MPs to take positive steps to secure the future of much-loved birds like Swifts, Lapwings, Puffins and more. We are looking for a crafty volunteer or two to help us coordinate producing ten sewn fabric banners. We have lots of crafty staff who would be delighted to help.
By opening up our work to more volunteers in this way, it means we can scale up what we can achieve and do more for nature.
We're looking for someone who can have early conversations about the project in April, and then coordinate a team of staff and volunteers during May and early June 2026. This could be part-time or full-time, and mostly from home (with occasional travel to Sandy, Bedfordshire). You can flex the hours to work for you - some meetings may need to be during the working week, but otherwise you can work at the times and days that work for you. If you enjoy working with our campaigning team, there may be other opportunities for crafty campaigning in future too.
The work would involve:
- Helping develop the creative vision for the ten banners.
- Recruiting and coordinating a team of RSPB staff and volunteers to come together to make them.
- Managing a small budget and helping source materials for the banners.
- If you're interested, joining us in Westminster and seeing them in action!
Full training and support will be provided depending on which team you are based with and what tasks you are undertaking but in general, we are looking for people with the following skills and experience:
- Some sewing experience - confidence in developing designs, using sewing machines, simple hand sewing and sourcing craft materials.
- Motivation to use your skills and expertise to save nature through campaigning.
- Good communication skills for engaging with different audiences, internal and external to the RSPB.
- Organisational skills to coordinate the production of the banners by a mid-June deadline.
This is a highly rewarding role and offers a chance to make a positive, creative impact. You will be making a genuine contribution to nature conservation, so if that is your motivation, you'll find satisfaction in this role. This role provides an excellent opportunity to donate your time and skills to have real impact on our work. You will learn all about how the RSPB works and gain experience working for an environmental charity. We like to think we're a friendly and welcoming team, so you'll have the opportunity to make new friends too.
