One-Off Practical Volunteer (Volunteer Assistant Warden)

The Belfast Window on Wildlife nature reserve provides an important breeding habitat for birds within Belfast Harbour, helping to safeguard species and support the RSPB’s wider conservation goals. Effective habitat management is essential to maintaining the conditions that breeding birds need to thrive, and volunteers play a vital role in delivering this work on the ground. As a Reserve Management Volunteer, you'll help carry out practical conservation tasks that directly contribute to the management of this unique urban nature reserve. Working closely with the Reserve Warden and, at times, independently, you'll help ensure habitat management plans are implemented effectively, supporting successful breeding seasons and the long-term ecological value of the site. What you'll be doing • Supporting the Reserve Warden with a range of practical reserve management activities, helping to maintain and improve habitat conditions for breeding birds. • Carrying out agreed conservation tasks independently on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, following established management plans and guidance. • Monitoring the condition of key habitats and reporting any issues, observations or maintenance requirements that could affect wildlife or site management. • Contributing to the smooth day-to-day operation of the reserve through practical outdoor work, helping ensure the site remains a valuable refuge for wildlife within Belfast Harbour. Skills and experience • Confidence in working independently, using initiative while following agreed plans, procedures and health and safety guidance. • A basic understanding of conservation management and the role that habitat management plays in supporting breeding bird populations. • Basic bird identification skills, with an interest in developing your knowledge of local species and their ecology. • Good physical fitness and a willingness to undertake a variety of practical outdoor tasks in different weather conditions.
