Opportunity image

We are looking for Volunteer trainees to support our people engagement work. Inspiring people about the natural world is one of the most important things we do. Our internships offer the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience. Our residential opportunities mean you get to live on site at RSPB Minsmere Nature Reserve - right at the heart of one of the best places for wildlife in the whole of the UK.

We want to welcome more people to our nature reserves, and we want to make sure that those experiences are special. For this traineeship, the work will have a people engagement focus and will involve some working with young people, like organising and running youth focussed events.

As part of this rewarding and varied role you will be:

  • Co-creating, events and activities with young people.
  • Empowering and enabling young people to take the lead to plan and deliver events for visitors.
  • Setting up and clearing up for activities and events.
  • Working with a team of volunteers to ensure events and activities run smoothly.
  • Sharing your creativity/enthusiasm for nature with members of the public.
  • Visitor engagement.
  • Daily management of visitor centre building/facilities.

The aim of our traineeships is to help build skills and to help people gain the experience necessary to help take steps towards a career, primarily in conservation. We are looking for individuals who are interested in saving nature and with the energy to learn. We are not looking for experts in conservation, or even people with lots of experience, if you are new to the sector, changing careers or looking for a new challenge, this could be for you.

As this role is about working with people, we are looking for someone with excellent communication skills and a genuine interest in working with a diverse range of people

Some desirable skills include:

  • Basic IT skills.
  • Experience spending time outdoors in nature.
  • Communication skills.
  • Planning and organisational skills.

This role is well suited to someone looking to change their career, or someone who is just starting out, you will gain skills in event management, visitor operations and public engagement. If you want to work in nature conservation or gain skills for other sectors, traineeships are volunteering opportunities that are created around your needs as much as the needs of the RSPB. You will have a say in your own development, you can work with your line manager to develop the skills you need. You will learn all about how environmental charities work to save nature and start to figure out what are of work is most suited to you.

You will be working as part of a wider team at one of the RSPB's Flagship nature reserves. You will have the opportunity to work with lots of different people and the chance to work with partner organisations across Suffolk.

We are looking for a time commitment of 5 days a week starting in April and finishing at the end of the summer holidays. This can be negotiated to fit both your and the site’s needs. Feel free to get in touch to discuss any questions you may have.
