Visitor Engagement Family and Children Events (Event Assistant Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff)

Why we want you
We're looking for a diverse range of people to take part in an exciting project helping children explore wildlife in Cardiff.
You'll be an essential part of the Giving Nature a Home in Cardiff project. Delivered in partnership with the City of Cardiff Council and Buglife, the project aims to enable more children and families to spend more time with nature in the city and take action to address the climate and nature emergencies.

As an Event Assistant volunteer you will:
- Help us run nature-based activities for families in Cardiff's parks, public spaces and indoor venues such as libraries and community centres.
- Inspire and enable many different people to take action to address the climate and biodiversity emergency.
- Help children use equipment such as binoculars and identification sheets.
- Encourage children to interact respectfully with wildlife.
- Facilitate discussions to aid learning.
- Actively include all participants in the session.
- Run sessions safely, adhering to RSPB risk assessments.
Commitment:
- At least one event every month.
- Choose shifts to suit you.
- Events typically run from 10am – 4pm and take place during weekends and school holidays.
- Some events are on term-time weekdays and are shorter.
- Online safeguarding training: 1 hour during induction
- An induction process with a trial event.
- Regular communication by email, phone or text with Events Officer.
The skills you need
Essential:
- Enthusiastic about outdoor learning and play.
- Enthusiastic about community engagement.
- A positive, inclusive attitude.
- An ability to connect with a diverse range of people.
- Working as part of a busy team.
- Comfortable interacting with young people of all ages and abilities.
- Social and communication skills.
- Resourceful, flexible and keen to learn.
- Organised and self-motivated.
- Interested in wildlife or environmental issues (you don’t need to be an expert).
- Happy spending lots of time outside in all weathers.
- Committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.
- At least 16 years old.
Desirable:
- Welsh speaker.
- An ability to speak languages besides English.
- Knowledge of wildlife or environmental issues.
- Experience taking photographs and/or videos.
- Training and uniform will be provided.
- Any travel expenses incurred whilst volunteering will be reimbursed.
- Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check not required.
- Reference check required.
You will need to do some important training as part of your induction:
