Residential on Reserve (More than 4 weeks) (Loch Lomond)
Where: Loch Lomond, Dunbartonshire Commitment: 6 – 12 months Duration: From May 2022 to November 2022 (flexible)
Why We Want You
RSPB Scotland Loch Lomond is looking for a long term visitor experience volunteer. With visitor numbers increasing each year, exciting projects and iconic wildlife on your doorstep it is a really an amazing time to be part of the team. Loch Lomond is a very busy site. We aim to deliver a first-class visitor experience at all times, as well as giving an outstanding home to nature.
The role will be diverse, and vary depending on the time of year. You could be exploring the reserve with groups of visitors, leading guided walks, inspiring people of all ages with rare plantlife, soaring ospreys and stunning scenery, as well as working with a great team of volunteers and assisting on practical conservation across the site. In winter you could be up at 5am witnessing 1000’s of geese leaving the roost with our bleary eyed visitors, or be engaging with a family of enthusiastic bug hunters at the heart of the reserve.
What’s In It For You
Although the main focus of the role will be on visitor experience, you will regularly assist with the survey and practical work on site and we aim to develop your skills to make you a competitive candidate for nature conservation roles. You will be an integral part of our small and friendly team and assist with all aspects of our work.
You’ll regularly work in and around the ‘nature hub’, initiating conversations with the public and growing support for the RSPB. You’ll have the opportunity to write creatively, taking a lead on social media and blog updates. You’ll help plan, organise and deliver events, such as, wild food foraging, bat nights and family nature activities. Our pond dipping area is popular during the summer and is a great place to inspire families about nature.
As well as working at RSPB Loch Lomond you may have the opportunity to work on the other reserves in the area including RSPB Scotland Inversnaid. You will also have the opportunity to work with partner organisations such as Scottish Natural Heritage and Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, making contacts for your future career along the way.
We will provide relevant training in volunteer management, practical skills, wildlife interpretation, visitor experience, media and health and safety. As well as setting up a personal development plan to ensure you get the most out of your time here.
‘I spent 8 months living on site surrounded by mountains and trees, and grabbed every opportunity possible. I wanted to know and do everything and the staff helped and supported me in achieving more than I could ever have hoped for.’ – Ami Kirkbright, residential volunteer 2017
Requirements
You will need to be at least 18 years old, preferably with a clean driving licence. The ability to work in a team is essential, as is enthusiasm, good communication skills and a friendly disposition. We need a flexible volunteer, who is keen to assist with all areas of the work, with an enthusiasm for wildlife and passion for the RSPB's work. The role will be varied but you should be prepared to work outdoors in all weathers and be able to undertake manual labour, with some early starts and late finishes (time off will be given in lieu).
Notes
Accommodation, including bills, is provided.
Appropriate training will be provided and pre-agreed expenses will be re-imbursed where necessary.
