Residential on Reserve (More than 4 weeks) (Long term placement - Dearne Valley, South Yorkshire)

Why We Want You

Old Moor is the centre of a busy and dynamic suite of reserves in the wonderful Dearne Valley. We are comprised of 8 amazing wetland sites and want to share these wetland oases with enthusiastic residential volunteers who share our passion for nature conservation.

What’s In It For You

During your stay you will be a key member of the wardening team and depending on the time of you year you will be carrying out tasks such as:- Scrub clearance, fencing, hedgerow maintenance, reedbed creation, estate maintenance, wildlife surveys and research – the list goes on! No two days are the same! The majority of the role will be practical conservation work but there is the chance to assist with the visitor experience and education team.

This is a great opportunity to see how a reserve works for people as well as wildlife. We get over 120,000 visitors a year so are constantly working to meet the needs of visitors and the wildlife that make their homes in the valley. During your stay, you will be living on the reserve in a beautiful stone farm house, with Old Moor as your back yard!

There maybe opportunities for training and ecological survey techniques depending on the length of your stay and availability.

Overall this is an excellent chance to make a genuine contribution to a leading conservation charity as well as gaining a valuable in sight into what the RSPB is all about.

Requirements

You will be at least 18 yrs old with an enthusiasm and interest in conservation. A driving license is essential. We are a busy reserve so the ability to work as part of a team is essential. You must be comfortable walking long distances over rough terrain and be able to undertake strenuous manual tasks outside in all weathers.

Accommodation, including bills, is provided.

Appropriate training will be provided and pre-agreed expenses will be re-imbursed where necessary.

If required it can be arranged to work 4 out of 5 days to allow time for a part time job alongside this position.
