Practical Reserve Work (Brushcutter Operator, Cornwall Reserves)

Opportunity image

We are looking for skilled Brushcutter Operator volunteers to join us on our reserves at Marazion Marsh and Hayle Estuary. RSPB nature reserves are special places for people and wildlife and we rely on volunteers to keep these habitats thriving and in good shape.

It might seem like these wild places have always just been there, but quite often we have to work really hard to maintain habitats to be in the best condition for wildlife. We have lost a lot of wild landscapes, so the small places that we do have, need a bit of extra care.

As a Brushcutter Operator Volunteer you will be joining a small team of operators and occasionally the larger Work Party team to undertake practical reserve management tasks:

  • Cutting access routes for Work Parties
  • Habitat management
  • Creating & maintaining footpaths, viewing areas and infrastructure
  • Maintaining and managing tools and equipment.
  • Following annual work plans.
  • Following Health and Safety protocols.

If you enjoy being outdoors, meeting new people and hands on conservation work, then this role could be the perfect opportunity for you. This role involves a considerable amount of physical activity, and you'll be working in all weathers and in challenging ground conditions, so it's great for your fitness and mental health. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a genuine contribution to nature conservation, and you might find it rewarding to safeguard nature in the area you are working to protect.

We are a friendly and supportive team. If you are volunteering to learn new skills and gain knowledge about wildlife conservation work, you will find that our team will be more than happy to help you on that journey.

We are looking for someone who can offer one day per week, Monday - Friday, with flexibility to suit work requirements. An existing, in-date City & Guilds brushcutter qualification would be ideal, but training can be provided for a candidate able to commit to a minimum of 1 year.

Please note this role is not suitable for under 18’s.
