Specialist/Expert Volunteer (Volunteer Fire Ranger, Dove Stone and Longdendale Valley)

During dry weather the moorlands around Dove Stone and the Longdendale Valley (Crowden and Arnfield) are vulnerable to fire due to arson, BBQs, camp fires and discarded litter.

These fires are devastating to wildlife and the fragile moorland landscape and destroy the places people love and cherish. They can also endanger the lives of people and livestock.

We need volunteers to support our new Fire Rangers with duties to include: high visibility patrols around Dove Stone, Crowden and Arnfield; engaging with the public around the dangers posed by campfires and BBQs; assisting with litter removal.

What do we need from you? You'll enjoy talking to our visitors taking a level headed, calm, friendly yet confident approach. As the role requires patrolling in a variety of areas you'll be physically fit and happy to work outside without shelter. You'll be happy to be flexible with your time, mainly volunteering in the afternoon and evenings, there will be opportunities to volunteer on weekdays as well as weekends and bank holidays.

While the role takes place on foot you'll need to be able to get yourself to and from the site for volunteer duties.

Please note you will be volunteering alongside a member of staff, this role does not require you to fight fires. We need volunteers on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays (including Bank Holidays) from around 12pm to 8pm (times may vary slightly). We are recruiting for several volunteers so you can choose a specific day or join a rota, but this role requires a minimum commitment of one day per week.
