Surveyor (Not on a Reserve) (Cornish Chough Surveyor)
Many bird, plant and other animal species are declining, in order to conserve them we need to understand more about their populations and their breeding numbers.
In this case, we are looking for people to help us monitor Cornwall's red-billed chough population and are looking for people who live in or close to the North Cornwall coasts specifically.
What You Will Be Doing We need your help with identifying new pairs and confirming their nest locations as well as monitoring breeding choughs during the spring and early summer. The data you will be supplying from the breeding outcome, we will use to monitor population trends, help protect the nesting birds and inform/advise landowners with good management practices to ensure the choughs survival throughout Cornwall. You will also be helping to maintain appropriate positive relationships with key partners and stakeholders e.g. land managers, NT, CBWPS and volunteers.
We are looking for volunteers with the following skills and experience:
- Basic knowledge of birds and wildlife.
- Strong identification skills of red-billed chough and breeding bird behaviour.
- Ability to walk good distances, sometimes on uneven terrain.
- Ability to complete surveys using an online form.
- A good knowledge of the area being surveyed.
- An understanding of the Wildlife & Countryside Act with regards to wild birds and their nests along with in the context of a schedule 1 species.
What's In It For You: This role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact for species, nature and the environment. You will have a chance to develop hands on experience and skills around surveying. An opportunity to be out in nature and benefit your own health and wellbeing, this role will suit someone who enjoys being outdoors. You will have to observe wildlife closely, which is wonderful if you take enjoyment from the natural world. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to develop your volunteering with the RSPB and contribute to our Saving Nature strategy by taking on this role.
