Surveyor (Not on a Reserve) (2022 NI twite survey - Causeway Coast)

Opportunity image

Many bird, plant and other animal species are declining, in order to conserve them we need to understand more about their populations and their breeding numbers.

We need your help to complete the 2022 NI twite survey to collect essential data about twites to monitor population trends and help inform the science behind our work. This science will then contribute to habitat management plans, inform policy decisions and help influence external organisations.

We are looking for volunteers with the following skills and experience:

  • Ability to walk max 5- 8km, sometimes on uneven terrain
  • Ability to identify twites by sound and by sight
  • Commitment for the duration of the project - 3 visits between May and July, see methodology below
  • Experience of farmland bird survey (optional - training can be provided)
  • Habitat composition quantifying (optional - training can be provided)

Methods

The aim of the 2022 survey is to revisit the seventy-two 1km-squares selected in 2013 using the same protocol, involving line transects at 200m intervals and, in suitable nesting habitat, five-minute stops at 100m intervals to scan and listen for twite. Counts of twite to be made over three visits between May and July between 7:30am and 5:30pm, in wind strengths < force 5 and avoiding conditions of persistent precipitation and poor visibility. Surveyors will quantify habitat composition in percentage to the nearest 10% for each square (Improved grassland, Unimproved grassland, Arable, Bare ground, Bog/Mire/rush, Coast, Heath, Bracken, Woodland, Scrub, Rock, Open water, Other to specify)

Dates for the surveys:

  • first visit: 1-26 May
  • second visit: 27 May – 15 June
  • third visit: 16 June – 9 July

The survey area is on the Causeway Coast Priority Landscape (from Portballintrae to Torr Head) including Rathlin Island so why not (re)discover some of the most beautiful coastal scenery in Northern Ireland while helping with the recovery of this priority species.

This role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact for species, nature and the environment. You will have a chance to develop hands on experience and skills around surveying. An opportunity to be out in nature and benefit your own health and wellbeing, this role will suit someone who enjoys being outdoors. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to develop your volunteering with the RSPB and contribute to our Saving Nature strategy by taking on this role.
