Biosecurity Team Member (Westcountry Islands Biosecurity Team Member)
Supplementary title: Westcountry Islands Biosecurity Response Team Member (Biosecurity Team member)
This is an exciting opportunity to join our Biosecurity Team, making a direct impact for nature on Lundy and/or the Isles of Scilly. The Incursion Response Team are responsible for protecting our most important seabird islands by reacting to, and removing, reported invasion of non-native mammalian species.
You will gain valuable experience and training in implementation of incursion response measures in the event of rats being detected on the islands. You will be working alongside other volunteers and RSPB staff as a team and working with the island communities.
You will need a range of skills and experience for this role including:
- Be able to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, and able to cope with a high level of physical activity.
- Work as part of a team of 3-8 people to carry out the main tasks.
- Follow H&S requirements of the project.
- Be flexible and adaptable to change.
- Have a friendly disposition and be able to communicate effectively with islanders.
- If available you would be required to spend at least a week on the islands
By being part of this vital team you will be helping to save some of our most iconic seabirds including Manx Shearwater, Storm Petrel and Puffin in some of the most spectacular locations in the UK and support the amazing recovery of these species since island restoration projects were completed. You will gain valuable experience and high-level training in implementation of incursion response measures in the event of rats being detected on the islands. Based on the mainland you will be part of a pool of volunteers that we will contact at short notice to respond to an incursion. We are not expecting everyone to be available all the time but if you are available we are looking for people to give at least a week of their time and you would be required to travel and live with the island communities for the duration of your volunteering time. You will meet and work with other passionate volunteers and staff that are experts in the biosecurity field and have deep knowledge of sea birds.
