Little Tern Volunteer

Purpose of the role: Are you passionate about protecting wildlife near you? We’re looking for enthusiastic people to help protect the Point of Ayr little tern breeding colony and engage visitors to the coast about them. You don’t need to know anything about little terns – we’ll help you learn.

Disturbance is the greatest threat to nesting little terns and we need volunteers to help protect the nests from human disturbance and predators such as birds of prey. Volunteers will support the RSPB and North Wales Little Tern Group to protect the small but growing population of little terns at the Point of Ayr.

What you will be doing:

This role is seasonal (May to August) and involves:

• Working in a small team alongside other volunteers and people from wildlife groups and organisations around the estuary.
• Engaging with the public, informing them of the importance of the little tern colony.
• Talking to visiting members of the public to prevent disturbance to the little tern breeding colony.
• Being outdoors in a variety of weathers.
• Monitoring numbers of breeding adult little terns, oystercatchers and ringed plover including colour ring monitoring.
• Helping install electric fencing.

Skills, experience and qualities needed: You don’t need to know how to identify wading birds for this role – we will help you learn. We are looking for people who love to chat to others and like being outdoors. No experience is necessary as all equipment and training will be provided, but we are looking for people who are:

• Able to communicate well with others – a real people person
• Passionate and enthusiastic about conservation and British wildlife.
• Happy to work outside in all weathers.
• Friendly and approachable and enjoy working as part of a team.
• Are willing to travel to the coast.

When and where:

Timing: May to August Volunteering to cover a 7 day a week rota 9am till 5pm each day Average commitment: 1/2 a day every other week-1 day each week

Location: Point of Ayr

Support offered: In this role you will be supported by the RSPB. There will be a short induction session about the Our Dee Estuary project and volunteering with the RSPB when you sign up as a volunteer with the RSPB. This will also include a health and safety induction session with information on RSPB health and safety policy, procedures and risk assessments. You will also be introduced to the North Wales Little Tern Group, a group of people dedicated to the conservation of little terns on the Dee Estuary. All equipment and training will be provided.

What you could get out of it:

This is a great opportunity to get out in the fresh air, meet new people, learn about little terns and gain new skills whether that’s monitoring techniques or engaging people in coastal wildlife. You will be mentored and supported by experienced volunteers. You also have the opportunity to become part of local volunteering group who protects wildlife around the estuary.

Other relevant information: Our Dee Estuary is a cross-border partnership project, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The project aims to connect coastal communities with their natural heritage to create a new community of stewardship to effectively conserve and safeguard the wildlife significance of the Dee Estuary.
