We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join the warden team at St Aidan’s. We want someone to help manage this important wetland reserve which is home to breeding birds such as Bittern, Black-necked grebe, Lapwing and Redshank. You will get the chance to assist with our variety of survey work which can include passerine breeding bird survey, Bittern, Black-necked grebe counts, breeding waders, moths and butterflies. You will also help lead our volunteer groups on tasks such as path maintenance and fence repair.

As well as getting the chance to work with people who care about wildlife and the environment you will get training and mentoring, and lots of first-hand experience in the day-to-day management of a wetland reserve. You will gain experience of leading volunteer groups on a variety of tasks.

Laura, a former intern, said ”An opportunity not to be missed. The RSPB internship scheme provides a wealth of experience, knowledge and skills that build your confidence for a career in conservation. A hugely diverse programme, including the people you meet and connections you make along the way, always accompanied by a wonderful procession of habitats and wildlife.”

  • As you will be joining us in peak breeding season good natural history knowledge is required.
  • Some experience of surveys, or the understanding of the methodologies is ideal.
  • Ability to work in a team is essential, as is enthusiasm.
  • Previous experience of practical work and volunteering experience is an advantage.
  • A driving licence is also required for this role as you will be using the reserve vehicles both on and off site.
  • Training (e.g. brush cutter, 4x4 etc) as required will be provided.
  • The internship will be for 3 days per week (midweek) for six months.

Closing date for applications: Sunday 8th May. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview (face to face or online) the week commencing 9th May. Some travel expenses are available.

Our internships are designed to offer work experience and several of our interns have gone on to find paid work within the conservation sector. However, we cannot guarantee future employment with the RSPB via doing an internship.
