Opportunity image

When

We are looking for someone to start from the 5th September onwards- for a 3-6 months stay

Why We Want You

Are you passionate about nature conservation? If so and you like a new challenge, we would love to hear from you.

We are looking for two long term residential volunteers to help with the habitat and estate management and species monitoring at Portmore Lough nature reserve over the autumn and winter. We need enthusiastic people to join our team of reserve volunteers under guidance from the Reserve Warden.

What’s In It For You

You will gain practical experience in conservation land management. Practical work will vary from habitat management of the fen and wet grassland habitats for a range of wetland species, to assisting with livestock management and the maintenance of visitor infrastructure. Survey work will include wintering wildfowl and wader monitoring.

Tasks will include:

  • Habitat management on wet grassland for breeding wading birds

  • Maintenance of the predator exclusion fence around the breeding wader area

  • Scrub control for restoration of fen habitat

  • Tern raft maintenance

  • Managing water levels

  • Helping to manage the herd of Konik ponies on the reserve, and helping to move the herd around to graze the reserve as needed

Requirements

We need someone who is enthusiastic, friendly, and who likes a new challenge. Every day can be different on a reserve like Portmore and you will need to be flexible in your approach to your work.

Previous volunteering experience is preferable but not essential.

You must be happy to undertake strenuous manual labour outside in all weathers. Some weekend working will be essential.

You must be 18, and a full clean driving licence is desirable due to the remote location of the reserve.

Notes

Accommodation (including bills) is provided. This is a remote site but the cottage is situated close to the reserve.

Appropriate training will be provided and expenses will be re-imbursed where necessary.
