Site Checks and Maintenance Volunteer (RSPB Middleton Lakes)
Site Check and Maintenance Volunteers, known as Site Patrollers, play an important role. This role is about ensuring that we maintain a site presence on the ground as much as possible, every day of the week. We are looking for people who can help us out by walking the reserve and undertaking a selection of checks and tasks. We have morning shifts and afternoon shifts. Our essential need at the moment, is for people to be available in the afternoons.
This role will include the following duties:
- Talking to members of the public about the reserve and the wildlife they might see.
- Checking paths, fences and benches and reporting any issues.
- Litter picking.
- Checking livestock (afternoon shifts exclude livestock checks)
- Reporting inappropriate behaviour.
- Checking/replacing signage.
- Reporting back to the site team via email. Urgent matters reported via phone.
- Opening car park gates (8.30am winter and 8.00am summer)
- Closing car park gates (4.00pm winter and 5.00pm summer)
Training and support will be provided but for this role the following are essential:
- Excellent attention to detail
- Good 'people skills', including diplomacy
- Problem solving skills
- Ability to submit site patrol reports electronically.
- Ability to carry out your duties in inclement weather
This is a really rewarding role. You will enjoy doing your role in a beautiful wildlife rich setting, the great outdoors will be your place of work and you will be able to take it at your own pace. By talking to visitors as you go along, you'll have the pleasure of helping people learn more about the reserve and the work of the RSPB, or just be a familiar friendly face to our regulars.
You will be making a genuine contribution to nature conservation, and you might find it rewarding to safeguard nature in the area you are working to protect. This role will involve walking over 2 miles per shift, some areas have rough ground conditions and you'll need to be able to carry out your duties in all weathers.
Please note that applicants under 18 years of age to be aware the role involves lone working and might not be suitable for your needs.
