Residential on Reserve (More than 4 weeks) (Onziebust)

Why We Want You: We are looking for an enthusiastic residential volunteer to help us with all aspects of running the Onziebust Farm Reserve on Egilsay. The volunteer will also have the opportunity to assist on neighbouring island of Rousay at Trumland reserve. Habitat and estate management will be undertaken, as well as surveying and monitoring. Priority species at Onziebust include corncrake, breeding waders, greater yellow bumblebee. Trumland is an upland site with breeding hen harrier, red throated diver and seabird cliffs. Tasks include:

• Helping with end of season hen harrier monitoring.
• The tail end of the grassland survey work
• Bee walks until mid August • Habitat management work for corncrake • Path and estate work on Trumland • General farm tasks on Onziebust

What’s In It For You:

This is an excellent chance to make a genuine contribution to wildlife conservation and to gain skills in habitat management and wildlife surveys for a range of species. During your stay, you will become a member of the reserve management team. You will contribute to practical conservation and learn about running and managing a nature reserve. You will gain a valuable insight into the workings of Europe's largest conservation charity.

Requirements:

You must be aged at least 18 with a full clean driving licence. Enthusiasm, ability to work as part of a team, and an interest in conservation and wildlife is essential. You must be prepared to undertake strenuous manual labour outside in all weathers

Free accommodation is provided in a small bothy which is open plan bedsit style with twin beds.

Appropriate training will be provided and pre-agreed expenses will be re-imbursed where necessary.
