Visitor Engagement Family and Children Events (Young Birders Walk Leader)

Opportunity image

Do you love wildlife and want to share your knowledge with other people your age? We need young volunteers aged 18-25 with a good knowledge of birds who are keen to share this with other young people. You’ll (along with another volunteer) will take small groups of 10-15 young birders, aged 11-25, on a walk around RSPB Rainham Marshes in Purfleet on Thames.

You’ll use your skills and knowledge to help young people spot and learn more about the wildlife they see. In an entertaining and engaging way, you’ll help them understand more about what they see. We’re all increasingly disconnected from the nature around us and, as a result, people don’t know and understand the wildlife they see and how they can help protect it. By leading a walk, you’ll be helping people not just to learn more but also to care more about nature. Plus, you get to be outdoors, keeping fit and active and enhancing your own wellbeing.

We need volunteers to work one day a month on Saturdays, Sundays or school holidays. Hours can be flexible

Full training, equipment and support will be provided for this role but you do need the following skills and experience:

• You must be a ‘people person’, who enjoys meeting new people and is a confident communicator when leading groups.

• Have a good knowledge of birds e.g. bird identification or song.

• Organisational skills, to help ensure events and activities are carried out safely.

We’ll provide a uniform and travel expenses (up to 25 miles each way). Successful candidates will need to complete safeguarding training and a DBS check, arranged by the RSPB.

Help us share our wonderful reserve with visitors who want to learn more. With your knowledge, experience and story-telling skills we can help diverse young people enjoy and connect to the nature around them.
