Visitor Engagement Volunteer (On Reserves) (Stour Woods Patrol volunteer)

Opportunity image

The RSPB manages a wide-ranging network of nature reserves, which are important for wildlife, and also special places for people of all ages and abilities to visit and experience a nature rich landscape.

Nature is in trouble, there aren't many places left where wildlife can thrive, and we want to welcome people to these special places.

We are looking for volunteers who can help with our visitor engagement activities by talking to people walking in the wood, those new to the reserve and regular visitors alike.

As a Visitor Engagement Volunteer you will undertake weekend patrols in Stour Wood and your duties will include some of the following:

  • Having conversations with visitors and helping them enjoy their visit.
  • Explaining the importance of the woods and estuary for both breeding and wintering birds, and why it is important to keep dogs on a lead within the wood.
  • Carrying out patrols of the main trails in the woods to check for hazards, and reporting any problems back to staff
  • Picking up litter as necessary
  • Talking to the public about the work of the RSPB, how to become members, and how their membership can help us to help nature.
  • Ensuring the car park is litter free and tidy

Full training and support will be provide for this role but you do need to be a ‘people person’ and have good communication skills.

This is a rewarding and enjoyable role. You will be working on a beautiful nature reserve, spending time in the great outdoors, enjoying conversations and helping people have a wonderful visit.

There is always the opportunity to learn new things and gain skills through volunteering and by working on a reserve you'll naturally learn about how nature reserves are managed and the wildlife that is found there.
