What?

This is the largest tidal reedbed in England, where 270 bird species have been recorded. In summer, the reserve is especially important for breeding marsh harriers, avocets, bearded tits and bitterns, while in spring and autumn the saline lagoons attract large numbers of migrant wading birds. In winter, good numbers of ducks and wading birds can be seen, as well as hen harriers and merlins. The reserve has up to 26,000 visitors a year, mostly between April and September.

Why We Want You: Enthusiastic volunteers needed to assist the reserve team with a wide variety of tasks relating to the running and management of the reserve. This may include habitat/vegetation management, fencing and general maintenance of the reserve infrastructure. During summer there will be an emphasis on visitor engagement, while autumn and winter work will largely be practical tasks, which can be physically demanding.

What’s In It For You:

During your stay, you will become a member of the reserve management team. You will contribute to practical conservation and learn about running and managing a nature reserve.

This is an excellent chance to make a genuine contribution to wildlife conservation. You will gain a valuable insight into the workings of Europe’s largest conservation charity.

Requirements:

Enthusiasm, ability to work as part of a team, interest in conservation and wildlife. You must be prepared to work outside in all weathers and you should be friendly, relaxed and able to engage with visitors. Minimum age 16.

Notes: Volunteers are housed nearby, in a modern, semi-detached house.
Appropriate training will be provided.

There is no charge to take part in the scheme. It is your responsibility to cover the cost of your transport to and from the reserve, and to provide and cover the cost of your food during your stay.

The RSPB will provide accommodation, together with basic services, free of charge for the period you are volunteering, and cover any expenses incurred as a necessary part of your work on the reserve
