Species Protection (Chesil Little Tern Volunteer)
Want to play a vital role in protecting beach-nesting birds?
Little tern breeding colonies throughout the UK are vulnerable to disturbance and habitat loss. The population of the Chesil little tern colony has declined markedly over recent years and this has led to the creation of the Chesil Little Tern Project, a local partnership led by the RSPB which aims to recover the population to a sustainable level. We need volunteers to make this project a success!
Role Description
We need volunteers for a variety of roles throughout the breeding season, including:
- Wardening the little tern colony to protect the birds from disturbance
- Nest monitoring & management
- Predator monitoring
- Maintaining site infrastructure
- Volunteer coordination & administration
- Public engagement & social media
Why volunteer with us?
Volunteering with us is a great opportunity to make a real impact in protecting nature. You will work as part of a friendly team and meet like-minded people. We will offer training and induction to ensure that you are prepared for the role and develop practical skills in species protection.
Skills & Experience
A full training induction will be provided so you do not need previous experience in conservation. General skills which will be useful include:
- Ability to work as a team and independently
- Ability to engage positively with the public
- Knowledge of little terns and other local wildlife
Role requirements & accessibility
We ask that volunteers commit to an average of 2-4 hours per week from May to July. Training and site infrastructure tasks will begin in April and volunteers may be asked to continue into August. Warden shifts are scheduled throughout daylight hours on both weekdays and weekends and can be flexible around your needs.
To volunteer on-site you will need moderate physical fitness for walking on the beach. You will also need to arrange transport to and from the site. The RSPB will reimburse you for out of pocket travel expenses. We will provide the equipment, training and any uniform needed for you to complete the role. You can also volunteer remotely if you would like to support with volunteer coordination or public engagement via our online platforms.
Under 18s are welcome to apply with parental consent.
If you are interested in volunteering with us we would love to hear from you. With your help we can protect the Chesil little tern colony long into the future!
