Project Officer (Biodiversity camera trap data processing for Gola Rainforest (at home))
We're looking for someone to help process key biodiversity data collected via camera traps within the Gola rainforest project. This opportunity focusses on helping the Senior Conservation Scientist to deliver vital data to assist in our understanding of biodiversity within riverine habitats in Gola. This project has an initial 6-month deadline but further opportunities may arise.
This opportunity will involve: • Identifying West African mammals (and some ground birds) from camera trap images using a remote access to an online camera traps images software. • Data checks, e.g. ensuring accuracy and validity (including, checking blank/non blank images)
Volunteers will be fully supported by the Senior Gola Conservation Scientist. You'll need to be computer literate, have a keen eye for detail and be able to confidently distinguish key features of species (on colour and black and white images). Due to the nature of the platform that is used for data processing, internet access is essential. 7-14 hours minimum per week is expected for this role.
Essential skills: • Attention to detail. • Ability to learn new species identification. • Understanding of species identification, though not specific to West Africa. • Familiarity with data handling and working with computers. • Interest in tropical biodiversity and conservation. • Time management skills.
Beneficial skills: • Experience working with camera trap images • Experience working with West African fauna
This is a really rewarding opportunity where you will have the chance to be a part of a unique international project. Your input will be a vital part of data processing and will contribute to our ecological understanding of this valuable tropical system. You will gain key skills in tropical species identification and data processing protocols.
