Youth Volunteer Leader (Youth Action Panel Co-ordinator)

We are looking for a Youth Action Panel Co-ordinator. Can you work alongside an established group of young people aged 13-22 to support them to learn more about wildlife, conservation and explore ways to get more young people engaged with nature?

The Youth Action Panel (YAP) has been running since September 2022, and is looking for an organised and inspiring individual to support them in ensuring the smooth running of the group. The YAP meet once or twice a month usually on a Saturday or school holidays at RSPB Rainham Marshes. It provides an opportunity for young people to socialise with like minded peers in nature. They undertake activities to gain skills, knowledge and experience within nature and explore ways in which they can inspire the RSPB and encourage more young people to connect with nature.

We are looking for a responsible volunteer who can work with the YAP to keep them motivated and help them take on responsibilities within the group. The YAP Co-ordinator will hold overall responsibilities for the group, for ensuring risk assessments are followed and the activities are well organised so the young people can work safely. They will work closely with the staff at RSPB Rainham Marshes to help suggest activities to the YAP and organise room booking. They may also need to oversee a small budget and help with processing expenses. Being a leader is more than giving instructions and ticking checklists, it's about providing motivation and being willing to share your knowledge and skills.

For this role you need:

  • Excellent communication skills; the ability to adapt language and approach for young audiences. To be able to liaise with parents and other youth organisations.

  • Ability to inspire and motivate young people.

  • Ideally experience working with young people but we'd also welcome a young person 18+ who has transferable skills sets and attributes to take on this role.
