Intern (Digital Media and Communications Volunteer)

RSPB Centre for Conservation Science are looking for a Digital Media and Communications Volunteer to provide support for a bold and exciting future of UK Treescapes project. This role is ideal for early career conservationists or media students looking to develop critical skills and real-word experience or anyone wanting to a make meaningful contribution to science communication. Interns bring in a variety of ideas, experiences and energy into our teams, it's so much more than just getting work done; we want to hear from you if you feel like you have the motivation and passion to save nature.
This role will support the STAND Treescapes project which unites an interdisciplinary team from RSPB, Cardiff University and University of Highlands and Islands to investigate future scenarios for Treescape expansion across the UK required to tackle the climate and nature emergencies and create a world richer in nature. You will be responsible for producing informative media content and updates to partner networks and interested parties within the research community through the project website and e-newsletter. You will also gain valuable experiencing creating media content at an in-person events held during the project.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Contribute to a monthly e-newsletter, including integrating multimedia formats, to share regular project updates with partner network and interested parties.
- Provide digital support during delivering of in-person stakeholder workshops through photography, video and audio recording.
- With training provided, produce an ArcGIS Story Map to present the project and its findings.
- Monitor and regularly update project website
- Liaise with RSPB communication team to identify opportunities to showcase STAND on wider RSPB social media platforms.
The aim of our internships is to help build skills and to help people gain the experience necessary to take steps towards a career, primarily in conservation. In this role we will also be offering full training to gain critical software skills for creating an ArcGIS Story Map to share the project findings. We are looking for individuals who are interested in saving nature and with the energy to learn. If you are new to the sector, changing careers or looking for a new challenge, this could be for you.
Desirable skills and experience include:
- Experience producing blogs, newsletters and written content
- Creativity and an eye for detail
- Competent using digital recording technology
- Good written communication skills
- Video editing and digital media manipulation skills
- Ability to work well in a team
Commitment:
- Home-based working with travel to attend two in person events being delivered in the Northern Pennines and Wales, travel expenses will be covered.
- Start date: June 2023
- Part-time working hours to be arranged with the line manager based on your available and can support flexi-working patterns.
- The role duration can be shaped to your availability however there is opportunity to support the project for up to 18 months.
