Visitor Engagement Volunteer (On Reserves) (Fen Drayton Lakes)

Opportunity image

Fen Drayton Lakes is a wildlife haven just 25 minutes from Cambridge and brilliantly accessible by bus and bike. The National Cycle Route 51 passes through the centre of the reserve, as does the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, so if you’re looking for a volunteer opportunity that takes you somewhere peaceful to connect with nature and different people then this is the opportunity for you.

Fen Drayton Lakes stands at one end of a string of wetlands and fens that runs for 25 miles along the Great Ouse floodplain. The reserve is a tranquil oasis of blue lakes, lush green meadows and wooded fringes along the river valley and is home to a multitude of wildlife.

The reserve has a visitor shelter to provide a welcome hub and information for everyone who visits. However, we are missing friendly people to provide a human welcome. There is nothing like being greeted with a smile and useful information on how to get the best out of your visit.

In this role you will be giving visitors a warm welcome and finding out how you can help them enjoy their visit, whether that’s pointing out where they can see wildlife, or advising on which trail to go around. As well as providing information about Fen Drayton Lakes and what makes the reserve a special place.

This is a great opportunity to be in beautiful tranquil surroundings at a time and day that fits in with you. You’ll meet all sorts of people from the reserve regulars to visitors from all over the UK. Connecting with different people is a wonderful way to boost your wellbeing.

You will also be part of the reserve visitor team and there may be opportunities to work together with fellow volunteers to develop the visitor experience at the reserve.

We are looking for someone who enjoys meeting new people and is a confident communicator. You don’t need any wildlife knowledge, just lots of enthusiasm for wanting to make sure that every visitor has a great positive experience.

Full training and support will be provided and by volunteering on the reserve you’ll learn new things every day from your team and visitors who are eager to share their wildlife experiences.

If connecting with people and nature at Fen Drayton Lakes sounds like the opportunity for you then we would be delighted to hear from you.
