RSPB Team Member (Onziebust wildflower nursery assistant)

Opportunity image

We are looking for someone, who lives locally, to assist with our small scale wildflower flower nursery on our Onziebust reserve on Egilsay. We have wildflower meadow areas on the reserve which are also a great habitat for all sorts of pollinators including the nationally rare Great yellow bumblebee. We need help with our work to improve and enhance the wildflower meadows.
The work will involve:

  • Nurturing young plug plants
  • Planting out, in fields, well established plug plants
  • Collecting and drying native wildlflower seed from the reserve and other parts of Orkney for next years stock
  • Collecting and spreading green hay
  • Maintenance and improvement of the nursery infrastructure.
  • There will probably also be opportunities to help with Great yellow bumblebee surveys

Skills you will need: You don’t have to be an expert in identifying wildlflowers, but a keen interest in our native wild flowers and greenish fingers would be extremely useful. The work will not be too physically demanding, but will be largely outdoors and will involve a degree of physical fitness
