Are you passionate about Nature Conservation? Do you want to help protect and develop British wildlife on the largest urban reserve in the UK? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you!

We have an excellent opportunity for someone to join our team at RSPB Rainham Marshes as a part-time Practical Conservation Volunteer Intern. This internship program runs for 6 months with a commitment of 3 days a week, starting in August 2023.

As an intern, you'll be at the forefront of our conservation efforts, participating in a variety of practical activities that drive positive change.

What’s in it for you: Everyday Learning: An ex-Military firing range, Rainham Marshes has become a mosaic of habitats, lowland wet grassland, Reedbed, woodland and rough grassland. While part of the reserve warden team you will develop your skills in identifying species, conducting ecological surveys, and understanding how all these aspects relate to the reserve management plan.

Habitat Creation and Maintenance: Roll up your sleeves and work alongside our experienced team to create and enhance habitats for key species, including Lapwing, Redshank, Water Voles and Shrill Carder Bees. Carry out habitat management tasks such as trail and infrastructure maintenance, Reedbed cutting and clearance of rank vegetation.

Inspire and Connect: Take charge of organising and leading reserve work parties, where you will motivate and inspire participants from all backgrounds to actively contribute to conservation efforts. Collaborate with fellow interns, exchange ideas, and develop together as you support each other on your journeys.

Mentorship from Experts: Benefit from the guidance and mentorship of experienced conservation professionals who are committed to sharing their knowledge. Our team not only has extensive knowledge of helping develop the careers of our interns, but they have also been interns themselves so know the best way to support your career development by creating a Personal Development Plan and by helping you with application writing and career coaching through regular one to one meetings.

Desirable skills: • A deep love and respect for nature and the environment • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills • Strong problem-solving abilities and adaptability in the field • Willingness and ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions • Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team • Basic IT skills

All required Lantra training and background information will be provided. This is an unpaid position, but travel expenses by any reasonable means will be covered by us.
