Site Checks and Maintenance Volunteer (Maintenance checks volunteer for RSPB fleet car LY65 MWN (Aylesbeare reserve workbase))

Opportunity image

We need a Car Maintenance Volunteer to do basic maintenance checks on an RSPB fleet car based at Aylesbeare nature reserve workbase. These are fortnightly checks (and adjustments as necessary) of tyre pressures, oil, water, coolant and windscreen cleaner fluid levels, plus handwashing of windscreens, windows and lights and vacuuming the interior as necessary. This will take an hour or two per session and can be done on site. A recurring usual weekday and time can be timetabled to suit the volunteer, subject to cancellation if the car has been booked out for a business journey.

Why we need you: Much RSPB work still involves many staff making essential car journeys (eg, for in-person meetings at other sites, training courses, site visits). This fleet car is used by several RSPB staff based in Devon for essential travel to different sites in the county and further afield. Usage varies from week to week. It is important the car is well maintained (and kept reasonably clean) between its scheduled garage services.

Training and support will be provided but the following are essential:

  • A driving licence (you may need to alter the position of the car in the Aylesbeare car park for its checks, and occasionally may drive it off-site for a garage car wash).
  • Ability to travel to Aylesbeare nature reserve workbase - you will likely need to drive there (travel expenses available) or be able to arrange a lift to/from the site.
  • Ability to do basic `under the bonnet' checks for oil, water etc levels and top up as necessary from relevant supplies to be kept on site.
  • Ability to check tyre pressures (and re-inflate as necessary).

This is an essential role to enable RSPB staff (employees and volunteers) to have access to a safe and clean fleet car for their essential travel needs. You will be doing the regular checks (checklist provided) at Aylesbeare nature reserve workbase alone but will likely interact with RSPB employees and volunteers there during your car `sessions'.
