Reserve:
South Stack is an ideal reserve to watch seabirds and choughs, with high cliffs, caves and offshore stacks, backed by 316ha/780 acres of heathland (Holyhead Mountain and Penrhosfeilw Common), and 43ha of coastal grass pasture. The RSPB Visitor Centre is located at the hub of the site and provides retail and catering facilities for around 185,000 visitors annually. Ellin's Tower, the RSPB Information Centre, is situated on the cliff edge overlooking the sea cliffs and auk colonies.
Why We Want You:
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic residential volunteer who is a good all rounder, willing to be flexible and get involved in lots of different activities including, heather burning, scrub clearance, fence repairs, chough transects. This role will give you a fantastic experience of what real work is like on a nature reserve with a busy visitor operation.
What’s In It For You:
This is an opportunity to work in a truly beautiful setting on a dramatic cliff top and to become an essential part of the reserve team, who rely heavily on volunteer support. You will gain new skills, be given training where appropriate and become part of the South Stack family! The RSPB is an active and exciting conservation charity, the largest in Europe. This is a great opportunity to use your time and talents to make a real difference for conservation.
Requirements:
We need a flexible person who wants to learn reserve management, with an enthusiasm for wildlife and passion for the RSPB's work. This placement will be reserve based and you should be prepared to work outdoors in all weathers and be able to undertake strenuous manual labour such as some heavy lifting, scrub clearance and raking heather. Skills such as habitat management, estates work and communication skills are all handy; a friendly disposition is a must, and a full clean driving licence and brush cutter license is desirable.
Notes:
Appropriate training will be provided and pre-agreed expenses will be re-imbursed where necessary.
