Species on the Edge is a new partnership programme of eight nature conservation organisations, dedicated to reversing the decline of 37 priority species across Scotland’s coasts and islands. Throughout the 4.5 year programme, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Species on the Edge will be working with communities across Scotland’s coasts and islands to help them protect their local biodiversity.

RSPB Scotland will be taking the lead on a programme of activity in Shetland to support red-necked phalarope, curlew, lapwing, twite, Shetland bumblebee, oysterplant, endemic hawkweeds and the plantain leaf beetle.

We are looking for volunteers to join in with Species on the Edge and its activities in Shetland which could include, but are not limited to:

Species and habitat surveying and monitoring

Practical habitat management

Advocacy and campaigning

Mentoring

Assisting at events or in schools

Micro-volunteering - quick and easy activities built around you and your lifestyle – the possibilities are endless!

Different roles will require different skills and varying levels of commitment. There will be something for everyone. We are keen to develop opportunities that are the best fit for you and achieve the most for yourself, the programme, and our target species.

Please use the ‘About You’ section of the application to let us know about your interests, availability, and ideas. For any questions or to arrange an informal chat about volunteering please contact the Species on the Edge People Engagement Officer Gareth at gareth.powell@rspb.org.uk.

All volunteer roles will be deeply rewarding and offer the opportunity to support Species on the Edge in a big way and make a difference to your local community, area, and the special species you live alongside. You will find satisfaction in shaping and creating a genuine and lasting contribution to nature conservation in Shetland, learning new skills, having new experiences, and connecting with and working alongside other volunteers and stakeholders in Species in the Edge.

Please note that expenses can be claimed for travel and other costs incurred while carrying out your voluntary activities. Full training and induction will be provided for volunteer activities as well as any equipment, including personal protective equipment where required.
