Visitor Engagement Family and Children Events (Girlguiding Wildlife Discovery Day - The Lodge Bedfordshire)

Opportunity image

Do you enjoy working with young people and sharing your enjoyment of nature? We are running a series of one-off events for Girlguiding Anglia and are looking for people to help set up and facilitate activities. This role is suitable for over 18s.

Why we want you

The RSPB has an established partnership with Girlguiding Anglia. On Saturday 20th April we have invited around 50 Rainbows, Brownies and Guides (aged 5-14) to take part in an event at The Lodge nature reserve in Bedfordshire. We are looking for volunteers to help set up and facilitate a range of nature-themed activities, and to share their enthusiasm and knowledge with the young people. This is a great opportunity to help young people access their local green space, to deepen their connection with nature, and encourage them to look after it for the future.

What you will be doing

  • Providing a friendly welcome to the girls and their leaders.
  • Helping to set up and facilitate an activity, such as a challenge walk, plant and animal ID, survival skills or natural arts and crafts. We hope to assign you a task that caters to your own interests and strengths.
  • Helping to tidy up at the end of the day.
  • Encouraging the girls to see nature in a positive light, as something that can benefit their physical and mental wellbeing.

The skills you need

  • You do not need to be a wildlife expert for this role. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with young people and is a confident communicator.
  • The ability to work in partnership with the event organiser and the Girlguiding group leaders to make sure the girls have a fun and safe day.
  • Comfortable working outside all day.

Additional information

  • Please let us know if you are a first aider.
  • Keep the application short, just a few lines about any experience you have of running children’s activities or events and any interests which you have in nature/wildlife, which you could share. This helps us to give you a role on the day.
  • Before the date of the event we will hold a video meeting for all volunteers to go through health and safety procedures and confirm your role on the day.
  • You will be able to claim expenses to cover your travel for the day.
  • This is a rewarding role which offers the opportunity to work alongside a friendly team and spend time outdoors. You will get to meet loads of new people in this role, enjoying conversation and helping people have a great interaction with the RSPB. There is always the opportunity to learn new things and gain skills through volunteering.

Please ignore the generic information below, as not all of it is relevant to this role.
