Intern Working with Young People (Education intern at RSPB Old Moor)

We are looking for an Education Volunteer Intern to share their passion for the natural world with school children who visit our inspiring nature reserve. Our internships offer the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience. Following a period of training and shadowing our team, we’ll ask you to take the lead in delivering pre-prepared, hands-on, exciting sessions to visiting schools. Typical activities we’ll ask you to lead include minibeast hunting, pond dipping and bird watching.

As part of this rewarding and varied role you will be:

  • Delivering educational sessions to early years and primary groups Setting up and clearing up activities

  • Working with a team of volunteers to ensure sessions run smoothly.

  • Assisting in creating educational resources and helping promote the schools on reserve programme.

  • Maintaining educational areas, with support from the reserves team.

  • Engaging in training opportunities within the RSPB.

We are looking for someone with.

  • Good communication skills, confidence, and bags of enthusiasm

  • A keen interest in wildlife, conservation and/or the environment - you don’t necessarily need experience of working with children or any kind of specialist knowledge.

  • Willingness to work outdoors whatever the weather and the energy to be on-the-go all day. A resourceful and flexible approach to be able to cope with a wide variety of ages and abilities of children.

  • The ability to follow instructions and abide by RSPB safeguarding policies and procedures.

  • Works well in a team.

Some desirable skills include: Basic IT skills. Experience spending time outdoors in nature.

If you want to work in nature conservation or gain skills for other sectors, internships are volunteering opportunities that are created around your needs as much as the needs of the RSPB. You will have a say in your own development, you can work with your line manager to develop the skills you need. You will learn all about how environmental charities work to save nature and start to figure out what are of work is most suited to you.

Your time Minimum: Ideally 2 days per week (5+ hours per day) Duration: March to July Volunteering with us can fit around a part time job or family life as you can volunteer during school hours only if you wish. If you have any questions about this role, please get in contact with us.
