Would you like to play a part in delivering technological change to the RSPB?

The RSPB, as part of the Windows 11 Project, is about to undertake the replacement and upgrade of over 2500 laptops. We are looking for volunteers with some IT / computing knowledge to help support the project team with this rollout. This role focusses on helping the Project Manager and other team members deliver the project and make an impact for nature. We anticipate the rollout to start in August 2024, with a completion date of September 2025, so would like to have this support in place by the end of summer. We think this would be an ideal opportunity for Computer Science students who are interested in or would like experience in Desktop Support, or anyone with a good working knowledge or a passion for IT. The support role will be remote, so you will be able to do this from home and we are also pretty flexible (within reason) with regards to volunteering hours.

This role will involve:

  • Collating and identifying issues
  • Troubleshooting
  • Helping the project team with fixes
  • The triage of support calls
  • Assisting staff with minor technical issues
  • Helping the project team with technical communications

You will be fully supported by the Project Manager, Project Executive and Project Team.

You'll be trained in everything you need to know beforehand, and we'll support you in your role every step of the way.

Essential skills:

  • A solid understanding of computer hardware, software and operating systems
  • Basic knowledge of network troubleshooting
  • Analytical thinking
  • Good communication skills
  • Problem-solving skills

Candidates will be interviewed, albeit relatively informally. The interviews will purely be to see if you are comfortable with the role and if they will fit in well with the team.

This is a really rewarding role. You'll have the fantastic opportunity to be a part of a friendly and dedicated team and put your knowledge to use and contribute to the effectiveness of essential RSPB project work.

You'll have the chance to meet new people across the board, such as internal stakeholders, the wider project team and colleagues from the wider organisation, and develop strong, lasting relationships. We can also help you to develop your current skills and give you the opportunity to learn new ones.
