RSPB Team Member (RSPB Blean Woods and Seasalter Level SSSI Internship)
Available from 26 August 2024 to 28 February 2025
Join Our Practical Conservation Team and Make a Real Difference!
Are you passionate about the environment? Do you dream of taking practical steps to conserve and protect our natural resources? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you! Our in depth volunteer role offers a unique chance to become involved in the world of environmental conservation while gaining invaluable hands-on experience. We are not looking for experts in conservation, or even people with lots of previous experience. If you are new to the sector, changing careers or looking for a new challenge, this could be for you!
Blean Woods is part of a larger network of woodland surrounding Canterbury that comprises one of the largest blocks of continuous woodland in Kent.
Seasalter Levels is a newly restored wetland to the west of Whitstable that will develop into a key part of an internationally important landscape of lowland wet grassland habitat across North Kent.
As an volunteer team member, you'll be at the forefront of our conservation efforts, participating in a variety of practical activities that drive positive change. What’s in it for you:
Immersive Learning: Dive into a rich mosaic of habitats, including a semi-natural ancient woodland, an evolving heathland, and a wetland resulting from recent restoration efforts. Develop your skills in identifying native species, conducting ecological surveys, and analysing ecosystem dynamics.
Habitat Creation and Maintenance: Roll up your sleeves and work alongside our experienced team to create and enhance habitats for key species, including nightingales, heath fritillaries and lapwings. Engage in habitat management tasks such as trail and infrastructure maintenance, coppicing, and invasive species removal.
Inspire and Connect: Take charge of organising and leading volunteer work parties, where you will motivate and inspire participants to actively contribute to conservation efforts. Collaborate with fellow interns, exchange ideas, and form lifelong friendships with people who will support you on your journey.
Mentorship from Experts: Benefit from the guidance and mentorship of experienced conservation professionals who are committed to sharing their knowledge. We will support your career development by creating a Personal Development Plan and by helping you with application writing and career coaching through regular one to one meetings.
Desirable skills:
- A deep love and respect for nature and the environment
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong problem-solving abilities and adaptability in the field
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Basic IT skills
This is a voluntary role that runs for 6 months with a commitment of 3 days a week. All the training necessary and background information will be provided and since you’ll be giving up your time, it’s only fair that we cover all reasonable travel expenses, within a 25 mile radius.
Please note that this is NOT a residential role, no accommodation will be provided.
