Residential on Reserve (More than 4 weeks) (Residential Volunteer 6 Months at RSPB Old Moor)

Why We Want You: Old Moor is the centre of a busy and dynamic suite of reserves in the wonderful Dearne Valley. We are comprised of 8 wetland sites, allowing us to create essential habitats in an urban area. We want to share these wetland oases with enthusiastic people who share our passion for conservation. This is a great opportunity to see how a wetland reserve works, gaining experience and qualifications to progress onto a career in conservation.
What’s In It For You: During your stay you will be a key member of the wardening team and depending on the time of you year you will be carrying out tasks such as:
• Scrub clearance
• Livestock management (including konik ponies)
• Hedgerow maintenance
• Reedbed creation/ management
• Estate maintenance
• Wildlife surveys
• Predator fence management
• Using machinery
• Volunteer management
No two days are the same! There are many more aspects to the role, including supporting our large visitor team.
During your stay, you will be living on the reserve in a beautiful stone farm house, with Old Moor as your back yard! Professional training is provided including: brushcutter, 4x4, pesticide knapsack and more. In addition to gaining extensive and varied work experience.
This a full time residential position, it can be a four day a week position if the candidate requires a part time job alongside the scheme. Overall this is an excellent chance to make a genuine contribution to a leading conservation charity as well as gaining a valuable insight into the RSPB.
Requirements:
• 18+
• Driving licence essential
• Enthusiasm and interest in conservation
• Ability to work with part of a diverse team
• Able to walk long distances over rough terrain/ carry out strenuous manual tasks
• Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions
Note- this role requires some weekend work and will be discussed at interview.
