Youth Group Main Leader (Edinburgh Phoenix Group)

Did you know that there are RSPB Youth Groups across the UK, and our network is growing and expanding, so we need more volunteers to lead and shape our youth group teams.

You could be the person we need to join this adventure and help support young people in your area to learn about, explore and help the wildlife around them in a fun and engaging way.

We know that if young people learn to love wildlife and nature, they will want to protect it and be empowered to take meaningful action to defend it in their own communities.

You could be part of a team of like-minded, enthusiastic people who love nature and want our younger generations to experience that sense of awe when encountering something new or the excitement of being part of a bigger movement to save nature.

What do you need to know?

• You will use your existing skills to lead and motivate a team of dedicated volunteers, delegating tasks by getting to know everyone’s strengths and experiences.

• You will be the main link with the RSPB youth team and be responsible for sharing information to the youth group. The RSPB Youth Team will support you to ensure the group is using our framework and operating within our standards.

• You will need to be confident with using a computer for example to communicate using email to send us required documentation.

• With your team you will plan the programme and run the sessions in a safe and fun way. The programme will be made up of activities where young people can experience and take meaningful action to protect nature.

• You will ensure that the group’s finances are managed in accordance with our policies and submit annual financial returns.

• You will liaise with reserves, local groups and other wildlife organisations. You will invite regular feedback from your group leaders, and most importantly the young people to evaluate the success of your meetings and work out what needs to be done to be even better.

• You need to enjoy working with young people – they are the heart of what we do. You will be asked to complete a variety of training including induction and safeguarding and data protection.

The youth groups usually meet monthly, and Main Leaders usually spend six to eight hours per month outside of the meetings on the role depending on how the responsibilities are shared within the team. Members of the Phoenix group are typically aged between 13 to 18.
