RSPB Team Member (Nature Journalling in schools)

Opportunity image

We will be delivering North East Scotland's first Nature Journalling school programme during September and October and we would like to recruit three volunteers to support our Community Engagement Officer (CEO) during the planning and delivery. This programme will be taking place in a primary school in the Buchan area of Aberdeenshire.

Nature journaling is a reflective practice that involves observing, recording and sketching the natural world. Journalling can help us to deepen our connection with nature, cultivate mindfulness, and develop a greater appreciation for the environment just by being curious. The aim of the school programme is to increase the level of pupil’s nature connection by supporting them in developing skills in nature journalling. We’ll do this through a series of specifically designed activites which support observation and learning about the natural world.

This could be the perfect opportunity for you if you have a passion for nature and/or drawing skills and would enjoy supporting children in developing thier own knowledge, artistic and observational abilities.

The sessions will take place every Thursday morning beginning 5th September until 10th October from 10.45 - 12.15. Ideally you would be able to commit to attending all these sessions.

Prior to the programme starting we will meet as team for half a day for training and to plan each session.

What will you be doing

  • Working in the classroom and outdoors as part of a team managed by the CEO and supported by school staff to engage children with nature and support them with their observations and recordings. Working as the lead with small groups within these settings.
  • Building your own nature journal to share in sessions.
  • Supporting the CEO with preparation for each session.

This role will require a PVG and the completion of RSPB Safeguarding Training.
