Practical Reserve Work (Langford Lowfields)

Opportunity image

Langford Lowfields is a flagship partnership project involving the RSPB and Tarmac, showcasing wetland habitat creation on a large scale. A thriving reedbed sits at the heart of this expanding reserve, with wildlife highlights including bitterns, bearded tits, marsh harriers, avocets, wintering wildfowl, starling mumurations and colourful wildflowers. The habitats at Langford Lowfields are constantly developing as the site continues to establish. Large areas of reedbed are complemented by wildflower-rich meadows, areas of dense thorny scrub and a small block of mature woodland.

We’re looking for volunteers to help us with this essential habitat maintenance involving tasks like reed planting, scrub clearance, infrastructure maintenance and keeping the visitor trails open. Your work will be fundamental for the conservation of the site; giving rare and threatened wildlife a home as well as bringing people closer to nature.

You’ll play a big part in the management of a special nature reserve, contributing to the conservation of rare wildlife and improving experiences for visitors. You’ll have the opportunity to develop new skills, become a valued and supported team member, meet new people and get hands on in the great outdoors, involving a variety of tasks.

This is your chance to make a genuine contribution to wildlife conservation and gain a valuable insight into the workings of Europe's largest nature conservation charity, witnessing the day to day management of this fantastic wetland reserve.

As a Reserve Work Party Volunteer you will be joining a regular practical work party team on Fridays and the 4th Saturday of the month to undertake practical habitat management tasks:

  • Cutting and clearing vegetation.
  • Maintaining and managing tools and equipment.
  • Creating and maintaining visitor infrastructure, such as paths and benches.
  • Following annual work plans.
  • Following Health and Safety protocols.

If you enjoy being outdoors, meeting new people and hands on conservation work, then this role could be the perfect opportunity for you. This role does involve a reasonable amount of physical activity, so will enable you to keep your fitness levels high, as well as helping your mental health and wellbeing. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a genuine contribution to nature conservation, and you might find it rewarding to safeguard nature in the area you are working to protect.

We are a friendly and supportive team. If you are volunteering to learn new skills and gain knowledge about wildlife conservation work, you will find that our team will be more than happy to help you on that journey.

This role is suitable for under 18’s.
