3 months

Where Home Based with potential to visit local Cambridgeshire towns and villages if wanted, but no obligation to.

When At a time that suits you. You can fit this in around your other commitments.

Minimum commitment Total of 10 hours between January and April.

Duration On-going until end April 2025 (but no expectation to volunteer throughout nor until this date).

Why we want you This role involves supporting our Landscape Recovery Project team. Alongside species recovery and restoration of natural processes, landscape recovery also has people at its heart. We want communities to have an increased sense of connection to the landscape and its nature.

At present we have little knowledge about the communities in and around the Ouse Washes and how they feel about the area and its wildlife. To allow us to better cater for communities, tackle any barriers that might exist and explore how we can better connect communities to nature we need to do some research into the area and the communities it holds.

We’re looking for someone who is happy to work at home with minimal supervision to support our Community Engagement Officer to research the area using the internet with potential for visiting towns and villages if needed (but no obligation to do the visits).

What will you be doing? You’ll be based at home and using the internet will do some more detailed research into the communities that live in the towns and villages in our project area. Reading up on websites and reading through social media sites you’ll research population data, local public transport, local amenities and facilities, local groups/clubs/organisations and key community members. If needed, but no obligation to, you could also visit the villages or towns to pick up information in person. You’ll prepare a short summary report of your findings on each location and prepare a table of groups/clubs and organisations that you came across in that location. You’ll be helping us to uncover new information about who our communities are and how they work.

What’s in it for you?

  • You will be able to volunteer in the comfort of your own home and at a time that suits you
  • Being part of a friendly team of like-minded people
  • Gain experience in community engagement
  • The chance to use your talents in researching and your passion for understanding communities better.
  • An introduction to the Ouse Washes Landscape Recovery project work taking place
  • Access to internal vacancies and RSPB training resources
  • Relevant H&S training
  • References for employment or further study - if appropriate to you

The skills you need

  • Competent using the internet and social media sites for research purposes
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ideally live near to the project area
  • Happy to work on your own with minimal supervision
  • A passion for community work
  • Local knowledge is great to have, but not essential for this role

Notes Appropriate training will be provided, and we can cover the cost of your travel to do any visits to local towns and villages.
