Available from 10 March 2025 to 12 September 2025

We need you to help us save two of our most iconic coastal birds, the Ringed Plover and Oystercatcher. These birds, which nest on our beaches, are finding it harder than ever to find safe places to nest and raise their families. This is due to a rise in visitors to coastal places, loss of habitat, and climate change.

You have the chance to be part of an exciting project on the Norfolk coast, Plovers in Peril, which since 2021 has been working to reverse the declines we’ve been seeing close to home, on a stretch of beach between Snettisham and Heacham. Working in partnership with Wild Ken Hill, the project provides much needed protection for these birds during the vulnerable nesting season.

As a Volunteer Coordinator you will be working closely with the Project Officer to support and coordinate our team of over 50 dedicated volunteers, who provide information and advice to beach users, raise awareness of beach nesting birds, and inspire positive action to help them thrive. This role will be key to help grow and develop the project.

This role is from March-September ideally for one day a week (however this can be flexible to fit around your commitments) and there will also be opportunities to extend the role beyond this time. Some of the role can be done remotely but there may be some travel required to the project locations. Any expenses incurred as part of the role will be reimbursed.

What will you be doing?

The work is variable depending on the time of year and project needs. Main tasks will likely include:

  • Helping to sign up and welcome new volunteers
  • Managing the volunteer rota
  • Supporting the Project Officer with volunteer updates, news, and reminders via the WhatsApp group, email, and regular newsletters
  • Organising volunteer socials and events to bring the team together through the season
  • Supporting volunteers with sharing feedback such as check ins or online surveys

What will you get out of it?

  • You will be playing a key role in the conservation of some of our most vulnerable species, the Ringed Plover and Oystercatcher
  • You will have the chance to make new friends and join a network of like-minded people with an interest in helping birds and other wildlife thrive
  • You will get the chance to develop role specific skills as well as other areas you are interested in learning
  • You will gain experience of working for an environmental charity
  • Training and ongoing support will be provided
  • Opportunities to get involved in other aspects of the project if you wish
  • RSPB volunteers receive a host of other great benefits such as 20% discount and free entry to RSPB reserves

What experience do you need for the role?

Full support and training will be provided for key aspects of the role. but some initial key skills include:

  • Good communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Good people skills and a good listener – the role will involve liaising and interacting engaging with project staff, the volunteer team, and the public at times
  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • Basic IT skills (specific training and support will be given)

This is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of the RSPB’s work on species recovery. By delivering this vital role you will be helping to establish and protect a healthy and thriving population of beach-nesting birds on the North Norfolk coast.
