Do you enjoy working with children and young people and sharing your enjoyment of nature? We are running a nature activity area at Girlguiding’s large scale regional event ‘May-hem’, and are looking for people to help set up and facilitate activities. This role is suitable for over 18s.

Why we want you

The RSPB has an established partnership with Girlguiding London and South East England, who are running a large scale regional event on Saturday 10th May. Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers (aged 4 to 18), will be brought together for a fun day outdoors at the South of England Showground, Selsfield Road, Ardingly, West Sussex, RH17 6TL. We are looking for volunteers to help set up and facilitate a range of nature-themed activities in the RSPB area at the event, and to share their enthusiasm and knowledge with the young people.

What you will be doing

  • Providing a friendly welcome to the girls and their leaders.
  • Helping to set up and facilitate an activity, such as nature arts and crafts, learning to use binoculars, nature quizzes and making a pledge for nature. We hope to assign you a task that caters to your own interests and strengths.
  • Helping to tidy up at the end of the day.
  • Encouraging the girls to see nature in a positive light, as something that can benefit their physical and mental wellbeing, and encouraging girls to act to help nature.

The skills you need

  • You do not need to be a wildlife expert for this role. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with young people and is a confident communicator.
  • The ability to work in partnership with the event organiser and the Girlguiding group leaders to make sure the girls have a fun and safe time in the RSPB area at the event.
  • Comfortable working outside all day.

Additional information

  • If you are interested in applying for this role we will hold an initial interview over telephone or video chat.
  • Before the date of the event we will hold a video meeting for all volunteers to go through health and safety procedures and confirm your role on the day.
  • You will be able to claim reasonable expenses to cover your travel for the day.
  • This is a rewarding role which offers the opportunity to work alongside a friendly team and spend time outdoors.
