Species Protection (Beach Nesting Bird Public Engagement (Sellafield, Seascale, Drigg))
Every summer, beach nesting birds return to the UK to breed. Unfortunately, these birds are suffering from a population decline. This decline is partly due to their struggles during the nesting season as they are not able to successfully raise chicks to fledging age. The two main reasons for nest failure are human disturbance and nest predation.
Most human disturbance is unintentional as most of the public do not know anything about beach nesting birds, and therefore are not aware that they could be disturbing them. Speaking with as many people as possible and raising that awareness is key to protecting these birds. Increasing local support for the project will also help it to grow so that more beaches in Cumbria can have protected nesting areas.
This role is from April-September (with training in March) ideally for at least one shift a week. Travel will be required to the project locations. Any expenses incurred as part of the role will be reimbursed. We will provide the equipment and any uniform needed for you to complete the role.
What will you be doing?
As a Public Engagement volunteer, you will be helping us to spread the word about beach nesting birds and getting beach users interested in helping them flourish. Tasks include:
- Be a friendly face and chat with people about beach nesting birds and the project
- Be present on the beach to engage with the public
- Attending events to talk to people about the beach nesting bird project
- You may be asked to gather data on public opinion that will help the project to improve
What will you get out of it?
- Meet and chat with beach users from all walks of life
- Be a voice for the voiceless by raising awareness of these birds’ plight
- Lots of walking and being in the outdoors which will boost both your physical and mental wellbeing
- For dog owners, this opportunity allows you to spend more time with your pet outside
- For dog lovers, you may get to interact with dogs as you try to connect with their owners
- Chance to meet like-minded people and make friends
What skills/experience do you need?
- You will need to be able to visit the beach and undertake regular shifts which will be booked via a team rota. This may require walking long distances on uneven terrain, and possibly negotiating steps down to the beach.
- Enthusiastic, outgoing personality
- Likes dogs and/or owns dogs
- Happy to work alone and as a pair
This is your chance to take part in a new project and help make a difference for these birds in decline. If this sounds like the role for you, we would love to hear from you!
