Site Checks and Maintenance Volunteer (Cattle Lookerer)

Opportunity image

At Fowlmere we use a small herd of cattle to graze the fen meadows during the summer to help keep them in good condition. We need volunteers to help with daily checks of the cattle, the fence line and their access to water, to ensure their safety and welfare.

This role involves the following:

Talking to members of the public about the reserve and the wildlife they might see. Checking fences and other infrastructure and reporting any issues. Checking livestock. Reporting inappropriate behaviour. Checking/replacing signage. Reporting back to the site team. Filling out an online form with the details of your checks.

Training and support will be provided but for this role the following are essential: Excellent attention to detail. Computer literacy, to record results of daily checks. Problem solving skills. Good level of physical fitness as walking the fence line takes you off the main path network and you will have to walk across boggy and uneven ground. Reliability. Knowledge of cattle welfare or a willingness to learn about it. Please note, this role does not include feeding or petting the cattle.

If you can spare 1-2 hours a week to help with this role we'd like to hear from you.

This is a really rewarding role. You will enjoy doing your role in a beautiful wildlife rich setting, the great outdoors will be your place of work and you will be able to take it at your own pace. By talking to visitors as you go along, you'll have the pleasure of helping people learn more about the reserve and the work of the RSPB, or just be a familiar friendly face to our regulars.

You will be making a genuine contribution to nature conservation, and you might find it rewarding to safeguard nature in the area you are working to protect. This role will involve a reasonable amount of physical activity, so it will enable you to keep your fitness levels high.
