Event Helper (Puppeteer)
Would you like to connect to your inner frog, fancy being a dinosaur or soaring about as a kestrel?
We are looking for enthusiastic people to puppeteer our giant illuminated wildlife sculptures at RSPB Old Moor’s WildLights Lantern Trail events and community events. The puppets are a fantastic way to engage with the public, tell people about Old Moor Nature Reserve and have great fun. To see the puppets in action head to the video section of our Facebook page: RSPB Old Moor | Facebook. You could have puppeteering skills already or come with bags of enthusiasm and willingness to learn/ give it a go!
We also have our Creative People role, which involves creating the illuminated puppets and leading lantern making workshops. https://volunteer.rspb.org.uk/opportunities/44357-event-helper-creative-people-2023-03-02
This role would involve occasional volunteering at events, often in the evening and at weekends but flexible to fit around your life style. You would be in a pool of events volunteers who between them cover our events programme. We currently do art/ lantern trails twice a year, in March and October. You would know at least a month in advance about events, would have an event plan, and could help with planning and ideas.
Our puppets are made from willow and tissue paper, fabric and waterproof PVA and carried on a back pack. They are fairly light for their size but puppeteering is still quite physical, so please consider this when thinking of applying. Full training will be given in how to use each puppet, before any public appearances.
This role would be suitable for 16-18 year olds, though Safeguarding would meet young people would need to work in a group.
The RSPB is committed to making our organisation diverse and inclusive, and, as such, are keen to encourage applications from everyone, of all ethnic backgrounds, as well as those with disabilities.
We believe volunteering shouldn’t leave you out of pocket, so will reimburse travel expenses. We look forward to hearing from you!
