Visitor Engagement Family and Children Events (Wildflower Planting Events Volunteer)

Opportunity image

Can you help us make a difference to bees and butterflies as well as providing great spaces for families to explore?

The RSPB and Ella’s Kitchen are working together to restore wildflower meadows across the UK, and at Dove Stone we are running regular events to engage families and children in activities to help pollinators and increase biodiversity. We are looking for people who can help us to run these events, which may include wildflower planting and creative activities themed around pollinators.

Tasks will include: • Welcoming people to site and directing them to where an event or activity is taking place • Assisting the project staff with putting up signage; handing out gloves and tools; showing people how to plant flowers or assisting with other related activities • Litter picking around the planting area and route to it if needed • Helping to tidy up at the end of a session

Full training and support will be provided for this role but you do need the following skills and experience:

  • You must be a ‘people person’ - a confident, engaging communicator who enjoys meeting new people, especially families and young people (which may include school or nursery children and brownies, cubs etc)
  • Organisational skills, to help ensure events and activities are carried out safely -An interest in learning a little about pollinators and grassland management
  • A willingness to muck in and help with whatever activity is being run that day
  • Physically fit enough to walk around site, help load and unload van and carry kit to the event area.

This is a really rewarding and enjoyable role. You will be working with friendly staff on a beautiful site, with the opportunity to spend time outdoors and contribute to an important conservation project. You will get to meet loads of new people, helping them to help nature and have a wonderful visit.

There is always the opportunity to learn new things and gain skills through volunteering, by working outside on a site like this, you'll naturally learn all about how nature reserves are managed and the wildlife that is found there. Travel expenses are available up to a maximum of 25 miles per day.

Events take place at various times including term time, school holidays, some weekends and some evenings. Events may not happen weekly.

(Please note Dove Stone is quite an open, exposed site - there is no visitor centre or cafe and the Council run toilet block is some distance from where the events usually take place)
