At RSPB, we believe in the power of community engagement to drive awareness and action for nature conservation. Our online spaces are designed to foster positive interactions where members and supporters can share their love for wildlife and discuss ways to protect the natural environment.

As a Social Comment Moderator, you'll help keep the RSPB online community a welcome, friendly, safe space for everyone by managing comments on our social media platforms and online ads. You will ensure that all conversations are respectful, meet community guidelines, reflect our values and remove harmful, inappropriate, or off-topic content. Your efforts will help create a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.

Your responsibilities will be:

  • Review and moderate comments on our paid activity across our social media platforms (Just Twitter/X to start with), in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Enforce RSPB’s community guidelines, ensuring that comments align with our core values of respect, inclusion, and nature conservation.
  • Remove comments that contain offensive, discriminatory, or inappropriate content.
  • Report recurring issues or concerning patterns to your supervisor.
  • Update other team members to make sure there is consistency across our moderation.
  • Share ideas on how to make our community engagement better and maintaining a positive user experience

The ideal volunteer will:

  • Exhibit patience, empathy, and fairness in decision-making.
  • Understand and respect RSPB’s mission, policies, and community standards.
  • Take confidentiality and safeguarding seriously and handle sensitive information with care.
  • Have the ability to remain calm and objective when dealing with negative or challenging interactions.
  • Carry out responsibilities with great attention to detail
  • Be able to work independently.
  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Have a strong understanding of social media platforms and online communities. This could mean either you have experience as a moderator or have been a active member in an online community.

Training and Support

You will be provided with comprehensive training on the following:

  • RSPB’s values, mission, and community guidelines.
  • Effective moderation techniques.
  • Safeguarding policies and procedures.
  • Reporting mechanisms for flagging concerning behaviour or content.
  • Social media training

Ongoing support will be available from your supervisor and the wider digital engagement team to ensure you feel confident and capable in your role.

Time Commitment:

This is a flexible volunteer role, and we will work with you to determine a schedule that fits with your availability. However, we do ask that moderators commit to a minimum number of hours per week to ensure timely review of comments. Ideally, we would break this down to 20 - 30 mins a day, 5 days a week. Your supervisor will be available Monday – Friday, 7am – 5pm so being able to make contact during those hours would be beneficial in case there is a situation you want support with. However, for someone with previous experience we can discuss a more flexible system.

What’s in it for you:

Community engagement is essential to getting more, and more diverse people involved in taking action for nature. Be an instrumental part of our mission!

You will be moderating on the RSPB’s main social media channels and for our paid content which carries a high level of responsibility which will provide great experience and would look great on a CV, particularly if you’re looking for a career in digital marketing, community management, digital community engagement, PR. We look forward to your application.
