Retail Volunteer (Old Moor)

Opportunity image

Do you enjoy meeting new people and feel that you have made a difference?

We are looking for volunteers to help in our shop at RSPB Old Moor. Where the role can be varied depending on the day.

Some of the roles include:

  • Welcoming and serving visitors.
  • Restock shelves and make our shops a friendly place to visit.
  • Enjoy learning about stock and products (binoculars and telescopes optional).
  • Handling cash and card transactions.
  • Keeping the shop looking clean and inviting for visitors to browse.

In order to ensure that visitors have an enjoyable and safe visit, we need a team of volunteers to help everything run smoothly. When visitors visit our shops, we want them to have a warm welcome and to be able to talk to the team about the wide range of nature themed products. This can be from bird food, to kitchen and homeware children's toys and seasonal products. All this work requires a team of friendly and supportive people to help us. We simply can't run our shops without volunteers. Profits made from our shops mean that we can continue to protect wildlife, they're an important part of our work.

Support and training will be provided but having the following skills or experience would be advantageous but not essential:

  • Have good communication skills and enjoy talking to new people.
  • Enjoy working as part of a friendly team.
  • Willing to be flexible and take on different tasks as and when needed.
  • Develop your customer service skills and experience.
  • Prior retail experience preferred but not essential.
  • Would like to support RSPB to generate extra income.

This is a rewarding role with a friendly team during which you will learn new skills and gain experience working in the hospitality industry. The money raised through our retail contributes to nature conservation, so you’ll get satisfaction from making a difference.

We are looking for volunteers that can provide some of their time for either a few hours, half or full day. However, there are various hours, days and times available and can be discussed with the store manager.

You will also be volunteering in a lovely light and airy space, where our windows and doors over looks woodland and a small seating area where the bird feeders are constantly busy and a variety of plants that may be in bloom, depending on the time of year.

The site has plenty of free parking available and we are the half way point for the Transpennine trail. We can cover the cost of you getting to and from Old Moor.
