Practical Work Off Reserve (Practical Work Off Reserve (Peaceplus Nature, corncrake project- Habitat Creation))

We need your help to dig up and wash nettle rhizomes at various sites across Northern Ireland. These rhizomes are used to create essential breeding habitat for Corncrakes on Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland's only known breeding site for this iconic species. No previous experience is needed. We'll explain and demonstrate everything on the day. Volunteers will help dig up nettle rhizomes, wash them, and store them in bulk bags ready for transport to Rathlin.

Washing the rhizomes is an important part of the process, as it makes them easier to transport and helps prevent unwanted seeds and invertebrates from being introduced to the island. Digging can be physically demanding, but we'll take a well-earned lunch break to refuel. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided, and toilet facilities will be available.

As this work takes place outdoors during the autumn and winter months, please come prepared with warm layers, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear. We will provide all digging equipment, including gloves, although you're welcome to bring your own if you wish. Waterproofs and wellies can also be provided for anyone who would like to volunteer but doesn't have suitable gear.

The RSPB and our fantastic network of volunteers, have worked hard to help bring Corncrakes back to Rathlin Island but there is still more to do. By creating the early cover on Rathlin Island, we can continue to improve breeding habitat and help secure the future of this iconic species.

So come and join our dedicated team of RSPB staff, supported by PEACEPLUS Nature and our fantastic volunteers. Learn more about the Corncrake project, meet new people, gain hands-on conservation experience, and have lots of "Crex" (Corncrake lingo) along the way. We would love to see you there!
